A JUNIOR officer of an Army elite unit and two militiamen were killed by Abu Sayyaf bandits in two separate incidents in Basilan province.

Army's 1st Infantry Division Public Affairs Officer-in-Charge Captain Franco Suelto identified the slain officer as Captain Mark Zember Gamboa of the Army's 4th Special Forces Battalion.

Suelto said the slain militiamen were identified as Haji Aldam and a certain Mused. Both were security personnel of the Tumahubong Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Development Corporation (TARBIDC) in Sumisip, Basilan.

Suelto said that Gamboa was killed in a clash with Abu Sayyaf bandits around 8:20 p.m. Saturday at Sitio Basak Tiki, Barangay Calugusan in Lantawan town.

The troops, led by Gamboa, clashed with about 10 Abu Sayyaf members led by a certain Halang alias Commander Jeck while conducting security operations.

The bandits fled after a 10-minute firefight.

Suelto said the security operations were conducted following the reported presence of a group of gunmen in the area.

He said Aldam and Mused, on the other hand, were killed in an ambush staged by another group of Abu Sayyaf bandits led by Radzmil Jannatul alias Kubayb around 8 a.m. Saturday in Barangay Mahatalang, Sumisip.

Suelto said the TARBIDCI security personnel were checking the reported cutting of rubber trees when the incident happened.

The bandits carted away the firearms of the slain militiamen comprising of an M-203 grenade launcher and an M-14 rifle, he added.
