Lawmaker wants all farms irrigated

A LAWMAKER is pushing for the construction of irrigation systems in all farms that are located in areas that irrigable in Zamboanga City.

Representative Lilia Nuño (Zamboanga Peninsula, second district) said once the irrigation systems are in place the local agricultural production, especially rice, will increase.

Nuño said there is also need to construct small impounding dam to store water during rainy season to irrigate farms during dry spell.


She said the local production of rice is only 29,000 metric tons (MT) annually, which is just 25 percent of the 102,000 MT annual rice consumption of Zamboanga City.

"We will not only alleviate the lives of the farmers, we will also increase food production," she added once the irrigation systems are in place.

She said she will confer anytime this week with Presidential Assistant for Food Security and Agricultural Modernization Sec. Francis Pangilinan to seek funding for the construction of irrigation system projects. (Bong Garcia)
