FOUR soldiers were wounded while another one escaped unscathed when ambushed by the New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, a top police official said Monday.

Zamboanga del Sur police director Senior Superintendent Sofronio Ecaldre said that the incident took place around 8:45 a.m. Sunday at the Deorok Bridge located in the boundary of Maragang and Lacupayan villages in Tigbao town.

Ecaldre identified the victims as Sergeant (Sgt.) Christopher Lorenzo; Sgt. Ruel Tomogsoc; Sgt. Gilbert Alferez; and Private First Class (PFC) Jervie Roxas of the 1st Cavalry Squadron, Mechanize Infantry Division.

Ecaldre said the wounded soldiers were rushed to the Tigbao Rural Health Center for medical treatment.

He said they were among the five soldiers aboard a military jeep driven by Lorenzo that was ambushed by a group of NPA rebels.

Ecaldre, however, did not identify the fifth soldier who was unscathed in the ambushed.

The soldiers were traveling to Camp General Arturo Enrile in the village of Malagutay, Zamboanga City from the headquarters of the Mechanized Infantry Division in Pulacan, Labangan, Zamboanga Del Sur when the NPA rebels ambushed them, Escaldre said.

He said soldiers and policemen pursued the NPAs rebels who fled to the hinterlands of Tigbao town. (Bong Garcia)
