A MEMBER of the New People's Army (NPA) died while a policeman was wounded in a clash in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, officials said Wednesday.
Army's First Infantry Division Public Affairs officer-in-charge Captain Franco Suelto said the clash broke out around 9 a.m. Tuesday in the village of San Francisco, Sergio Osmeña, Zamboanga del Norte.
Suelto said the clash ensued when policemen from the Provincial Public Safety Battalion chanced upon the NPA insurgents while conducting security patrol in the area.
Zamboanga del Norte police director Senior Superintendent James Mejia said Police Officer 1 Edward Panoril was wounded in the clash.
Mejia said the NPA rebels fled upon sensing the arrival of reinforcements.
He said soldiers and policemen were immediately positioned in the nearby villages of Macalibre, Princesa Lamaya and Kauswagan after the clash.
He said policemen were also positioned as blocking forces in the village of Maligaya in the nearby Municipality of Polanco following the reported evacuation of residents in the area.
Suelto said the troops have recovered the remains of a slain NPA rebel around 5:30 p.m. while conducting clearing operations in Barangay San Francisco, Sergio Osmeña.
Suelto said the troops also recovered an improvised explosive device, a grenade, ammunition for AK-47 assault rifle and subversive documents of high intelligence value.
The clash triggered evacuation of some 250 civilians to the Sergio Osmeña municipal covered court. They were provided relief aid by the Municipal Government.
