GOVERNMENT forces have captured an alleged “Amazon-leader” of the New People’s Army (NPA) following a gunfight in a remote village of Zamboanga del Norte, a military official said Tuesday.

The Army’s 101st Infantry Battalion commander Colonel Apolinario Alobba identified the captured NPA Amazon-leader as Mercy Maghinay alias Ka Joycee, 35.

Alobba said Maghinay was captured around 12 noon Monday following a 15-minute gunfight in Sitio Guigang in the village of Guibo, Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte.

Alobba said Maghinay is the secretary of the Front Feliciano “B” of the NPA’s Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee.

Alloba said the gunfight ensured when NPA rebels fired upon the government troops while the latter were conducting security patrol in the area.

He said Maghinay was captured after she was abandoned by her comrades who fled to different directions.

He said the troops have recovered from the site of the fire fight a shotgun, a .45 calibre pistol, a hand grenade, and P100,000 cash.

Maghinay was turned over to the custody of the police for the filing of appropriate charges against the captured NPA leader, Alobba said.
