CITY Agriculturist Diosdado Palacat has ordered his field technicians to keep a close watch on the coconut farms in their respective areas to ensure these are free from scale insects or "cocolisap" infestation.

Palacat issued the order as he advised the local coconut farmers to adopt the intercropping system of farming to prevent, if not lessen the infestation of cocolisap.

Intercropping means the farmers should plant other kinds of crops in between rows of coconuts like banana, cassava and others.

Palacat explained the cocolisap will attack first the other crops in intercrop farming, instead of directly invading the coconut trees, thereby preventing, if not lessening cocolisap infestation.

He said Zamboanga City has a total of 35,000 hectares of coconut farms spread all over the six agricultural districts that cover the 98 villages.

He confirmed that the cocolisap has already infested some farms in the city’s west coast. However, affected in the infestation are fruit-bearing trees like lanzones, according to Palacat.

He also told farmers that cocolisap could be eliminated through spraying water mixed with detergent. (Bong Garcia)
