Militiaman dies, son unscathed in gun attack

A MILITIAMAN was killed while his son escaped unscathed in a gun attack in the hinterlands of Zamboanga del Sur.

The Zamboanga del Sur Police Office reported that the incident took place around 6 p.m. Saturday at Purok 1 in the village of Nian, Dinas municipality.

Killed was Rene Banaag, 38, a militiaman assigned with the 7th Zamboanga del Sur militia company based in the village of Tarakan, Dinas town.


Unscathed was Banaag’s son, Rene Boy, 12, the police said.

Investigation showed the victims were carrying wood when the suspect, Morsid Dumato, 21, appeared from behind and repeatedly shot the elder Banaag with a .45 caliber pistol, the police said.

The suspect fled and remains at large and is the subject of a manhunt, the police said.
