CITY Health Officer Dr. Rodelin Agbulos said they have recorded a decline of mortality rate among the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) housed on tents at the R.T. Lim Boulevard after the gradual transfer to the transitory sites.

Agbulos’s office has recorded a total of 114 mortalities among IDPs as of last week since the attack broke out last September 9.

The attack broke out after hundreds of Misuari-faction Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) rebels infiltrated Zamboanga City.

Agbulos said they have so far recorded only two mortalities among the remaining IDPs house on tents at the R.T. Lim Boulevard for the past 20 days unlike in the previous weeks.

“This is a positive note that means we were able to bring them to a place which is very conducive and away from health risks,” Agbulos said.

The City Government has so far transferred 79 IDP-families as early as April to the elementary schools in the villages of Arena Blanco and Mampang to help decongest the R.T. Lim Boulevard in view of health risks.

On Wednesday last week, the IDP-families were transferred from the two schools to the newly-constructed bunkhouses in one of the transitory sites at Sitio Masepla in the village of Mampang to clear the two schools in time for the opening of school 2014-2015.

Assistant City Administrator Dr. Elmeir Apolinario said the Masepla transitory site will serve as their temporary shelter pending construction of permanent houses in their areas of origin.

Agbulos hopes that the remaining IDP-families from the R.T. Lim Boulevard and from the sports complex can be transferred to the transitory sites the soonest time possible to minimize if not prevent deaths among the IDPs. (Bong Garcia)
