A POLICEMAN has survived an ambush staged by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police said Wednesday.

Zamboanga del Sur police director Senior Superintendent Sofronio Ecaldre said the incident took place around 5 p.m. Tuesday in the village of Poblacion, Tigbao municipality.

Ecaldre identified the victim as Senior Police Officer 4 (SPO4) Eleazar Carcallas who is assigned at the Tigbao Municipal Police Station.

Investigation showed Carcallas was on the way home from duty when suspected NPA rebels ambushed him, Ecaldre said.

However, he said that Carcallas, although wounded, managed to return fire and the NPA rebels fled upon sensing the arrival of responding policemen.

Combined police and military forces are tracking down the whereabouts of the NPA rebels, he said.
