TWO suspected members of the arson unit of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in a clash with soldiers in the province of Misamis Oriental, a military official said Wednesday.

Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom) chief Lieutenant General Ricardo Rainier Cruz III said the clash took place around 11:24 a.m. Monday at Sitio Mangilet in the village of Balason, Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental.

Cruz said the identities of the slain NPA rebels remain unknown except that they were reported to be members of the NPA’s arson unit.

Cruz said the clash ensued while the troops from the Army’s 58th Infantry Battalion were checking the reported presence of the NPAs in the village of Balason.

Cruz said the residents reported that the NPA rebels are on extortion activities and “trying to get new recruits in the adjacent barangays.”

Cruz extoled the residents for timely reporting the NPA’s illegal activities, harassments and deception in the far-flung Barangays.

Eastmincom information officer Captain Alberto Caber said the troops have recovered two M-16 Armalite rifles from the possession of the two slain NPA rebels.

Caber said the remains of the slain rebels were turned over to the village officials for proper disposition.

No one among the troops were either killed or wounded during the clash, Caber added.
