Cop, 4 others killed in shootings-A A +A

FIVE people, including a policeman and a village watchman, were killed while one escaped unscathed in separate gun attacks here in the region, the police reported Tuesday.
The police said that four of the five victims were identified as the following: Senior Police Officer 1 (SPO1) Mamduh Abubakar Balahim; Paradise Elarcosa; Islao Ferolino, and Rodolfo Umpa. The fifth one remained unidentified.
Unscathed was Elarcosas’ younger brother, Robert, the police said.
Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula (PRO-9) Spokesman Senior Inspector Joseph Ortega said that Balahim was shot to death around 5:15 p.m. Monday near the Jumbo Bridge in the village of Guiwan, east of Zamboanga City.
Ortega said Balahim was driving his motorcycle when shot to death by one of two men wearing full-face crash helmets riding tandem on another motorcycle.
Balahim, who was assigned with the Isabela City Police Station, was in Zamboanga City as he is undergoing a course on Disaster Search and Rescue Management Training at Regional Special Training Unit in Camp Abendan.
Ortega said that Elarcosa, who is a village watchman, was shot and killed around 9:30 p.m. Sunday in the village of Nasibac, Leon Postigo, Zamboanga del Norte.
Ortega said that Elarcosa and his younger brother were on the way home after rendering duty when shot by a lone gunman.
He said Elarcosa was rushed to the Rural Health Unit but was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
Elarcosa’s younger brother was unharmed.
Ortega said that Ferolino was shot to death around 7 p.m. Saturday in the village of Sitio Dumuyong in the village of Guibo, Siayan, Zamboanga del Norte.
Ortega said that Ferolino, 40, a farmer was resting at his residence when the suspect appeared and opened fire.
He said that Umpa was shot to death by an unidentified gunman around 10 p.m. Sunday at Purok Madasigon in the village of Ignacion Garrata, Dinas, Zamboanga del Sur.
He said that Umpa was sitting on a bench in front of a store owned by a neighbor when the suspect surfaced and fatally shot him.
He said the fifth victim remained unidentified. The victim was wearing orange t-shirt with denim pants and aged between 30 to 35 years old.
The victim, whose height is about 5’5”, was shot dead around 10 p.m. Sunday at Purok 6A in the village of Recodo, Zamboanga City, Ortega said. (Bong Garcia)
