AN ESTIMATED P1.5-million worth of properties went up in smoke in a fire that displaced some 35 families in Pagadian City, the capital of Zamboanga del Sur province, an official said Friday.

Senior Inspector Reggy Olmedo, officer-in-charge of the Pagadian City Fire Station, said the incident broke out around 11:15 a.m. Thursday at Zone 1 in the village of Tiguma, Pagadian City.

Olmedo said the fire started at one of the bedrooms of a one-storey house owned by Julieta Malunes and rapidly spread to the nearby houses.

Olmedo said that 24 houses were razed to the ground during the fire incident that was contained around 1 p.m. Thursday.

The City Government of Pagadian, with the help of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC), has provided immediate assistance to the families displaced by the fire incident.

CDRRMC head Haron Damada said that among the immediate assistance they provided to the fire victims were basic needs like food and kitchen utensils.
