ZAMBOANGA (Updated) -- The vice-mayor of a town in Basilan who was abducted Tuesday was released in Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur, said a top official.

Mayor Ma. Isabelle Climaco-Salazar said that Vice Mayor Arsina Nanoh, 20, of Hadji Muhtammad, Basilan, was released Wednesday morning in Pagadian City.

Nanoh, also a gold jewelry trader, was abducted by a group of unidentified persons around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at a shopping mall along La Purisima Street, Zamboanga City.

Mayor Salazar made the announcement Thursday based on the report of the Zamboanga City police officer-in-charge Angelito Casimiro.

Nanoh reportedly boarded Wednesday a commercial plane in Pagadian City to Manila where she was met by her husband, Alnajil.

Zamboanga City police spokesman Alex Mabalot said he does not know if a ransom was paid.

But Zamboanga del Sur Police Director Sofronio Ecaldre denied Thursday that Nanoh was freed in Pagadian City.

He said he ordered his personnel to check the veracity of the report “but it turned out negative” as of Thursday.

Ecaldre said he was surprised after several reporters called him asking about the vice-mayor.

Ecaldre added that they are continuously monitoring the report.

Nanoh is the latest in a series of abductions in the troubled southern region where militants are holding two European bird watchers. (Bong Garcia/With AP/Sunnex)
