LOCAL funeral parlors in Zamboanga City soon can no longer just pick up and embalm cadavers and charged exorbitant fees without the consent of the family of the deceased, a city official said.

Councilor Juan Climaco Elago II said the City Council of Zamboanga has already approved on first reading his proposed ordinance prohibiting and penalizing such practice in the city.

Elago said he authored the proposed ordinance after it has been observed that personnel of the local funeral parlors just pick up in hospitals and embalm cadavers even without the consent of the family of the deceased.

Elago said there were several instances in the past wherein cadavers were not released by the funeral parlors if and when the family cannot pay the embalming service of P10,000.

The management of the funeral parlor will be required to secure consent from the family of the deceased once the proposed ordinance will be approved.

Elago said they will also be required to indicate in the signed consent the amount the family is going to pay to embalm the cadaver.

He said the family can claim the cadaver for free if a funeral parlor embalms a cadaver without the knowledge of the family once the ordinance is approved.

He said also included in his proposed ordinance is the increase of the city government’s burial assistance from P6,000 to P10,000.

The proposed ordinance was forwarded to the City Council’s Committee on Ordinances and Resolutions for public hearing, he said. (Bong Garcia)
