TWO government militiamen were killed while three others were wounded in a clash with a group of lawless elements in a remote village of Basilan province, a military official disclosed Saturday.
Army’s First Infantry Division information officer Captain Jefferson Mamauag said the clash broke out around 6:30 a.m. Friday at Sitio Buhi in the village of Sukaten, Sumisip, Basilan province.
Mamauag identified the slain militiamen as Duminta Gulinda and Bejo Sampang.
The wounded militiamen were Almirin Pantao, Omar Jadjales, and Oloy Malanji, who were rushed to a hospital in Isabela City, the province’s capital.
Mamauag said the clash broke out when the militiamen were checking the reported presence of 15 lawless elements at a water system project site of the Municipal Government at Sitio Buhi in the village of Sukaten.
The lawless elements led by Kotatong Balaman occupied the project site and threatened the workers to stop the project implementation, Mamauag said.
He said Balaman leads a lawless group that is responsible in atrocities to include extortion in the area of Sumisip municipality.
He said the group of Balaman were believed to have sustained casualties as bloodstains were visible in their path of withdrawal.
