THREE people were injured in a beachside explosion in the province of Basilan, the police reported Monday.

Zamboanga Peninsula police information officer Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca said the blast happened around 7:30 a.m. Sunday at Sitio Parola in the village of Marang-Marang, Malamawi Island, Isabela City, the capital of Basilan.

Huesca identified the victims as Asibar Usman, 23; Ridzman Usman, 20; and, Soriada Usman, 38, all residents of Marang-Marang village.

All of the victims are workers of Jundam Yusop, who is a trader of beach sand.

Police investigation showed that the victims were gathering and loading beach sand when Asibar found a grenade after he pulled one of the empty sacks they were bringing.

The police said the MK2 grenade exploded when Asibar placed it on the sand.

The victims were admitted at the hospital in Isabela City while investigation continues to determine who owned the grenade, the police added.
