A FISHERMAN from Negros Oriental was rescued in the waters off Zamboanga del Norte while drifting at sea for five days, the police reported Saturday.

Rescued was Jerry Gahonera, 39, a fisherman from the village of Nasipit, Siaton, Negros Oriental, according to Zamboanga Peninsula police information officer Ariel Huesca.

Chief Inspector Huesca said that Gahonera was rescued around 10:40 a.m. Friday along the coast of Sitio Sinonoc in the village of Kauswagan, Baliguian, Zamboanga del Norte.

Huesca said the residents in the area saw Gahonera drifting at sea and immediately reported it to the police in Baliguian town.

Gahonera told the Baliguian policemen that he and another fisherman from Nasipit, Siaton went out fishing last January 12.

While fishing, Gahonera said they were separated after they were battered by storm surge at high seas.

Gahonera said he ran out of fuel and drifted at sea when his motorized banca capsized due to strong waves and wind and heavy rains.

After his rescue, Huesca said Gahonera was brought to Baliguian Rural Health Unit for medical check-up and was later referred to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Gahonera is presently under the care of Baliguian Municipal Police Station while coordination is being made with the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office, Huesca said. (Bong Garcia)
