Zambo farmers shine in Gawad Saka search-A A +A

FIVE Zamboanga City-based farmer organizations, along with other groups, will represent Zamboanga Peninsula in the National Gawad Saka search, an official announced.
This as the five farmer groups won in the recently held Regional Gawad Saka search during the Regional Family Farm Forum (FFF) held in Pagadian City, the capital of Zamboanga del Sur province, according to Diosdado Palacat, city agriculturist.
The local farmer organization that were declared winners in the regional search are as follows: Outstanding Young Farmer Organization, Greenfield 4H Club–Tulungatung; Outstanding Cassava Farmer, Hakim Jala–Lubigan; Outstanding High Value Crops Development Program Entrepreneur, Fe Hao–Sta. Maria; Outstanding High Value Commercial Crops (Vegetables) farmer, Ricardo Montebon-Lunzuran; and, Outstanding Corn Farmer, Dolores Dizon-Bolong.
The FFF is a regular project spearheaded by the Department of Agricutlure–Agricultural Training Institute (DA-ATI).
It is aimed to promote food security and self-sufficiency, through rural-based organizations and the DA, Palacat said.
Aside from the Gawad Saka awards, Palacat said this city also emerged victorious in various 4-H competitions held during the forum.
For the commodity category, the winning entries included products developed by Zamboanga City farmers such as the Sarsa de Arroz by Loisa Rose delos Reyes of Mampang (Rice Development category, 1st place), the Ube Latina by Sharza Abrera of Tulungatung (Rootcrops category, 1st place), the Indigenous Handicraft Using Rice Hull by Reymark Marcos of Culianan (Handicraft category, 1st place), the Zamboanga Beef Chunk by Kier dela Calsada from Mangusu (Livestock and Poultry Development, 1st place).
Winners for different competitions also included: Ralie Ditosil of Ayala for the poster-making contest (1st place), Rizza Earl Angeles of Mampang for the quiz bee (1st place), Rey Cris Quijano of Tolosa for the extemporaneous speech contest (3rd place), and Romeo Saavedra of Culianan for the singing contest (2nd place).
The combined efforts of Zamboanga City farmer organization, Rural Improvement Clum, and 4-H group, on the other hand, landed second place in the cultural presentation, Palacat said.
