A TOTAL of 6,113 individuals from Zamboanga Peninsula region and three nearby provinces were hired abroad since January 2013.

Marietta Bellotindos, of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), said the employees were hired as professionals, clerks, service workers, sales workers, agricultural workers, operators and laborers.

Bellotindos said the workers were employed through agency hiring, government placements or by name hiring which they secured from overseas employment without the participation of any agency.

The lack of better job opportunities locally prompted them to seek jobs overseas, she said, adding that the workers left in batches to their respective employment destinations.

In January, a total of 1,156 workers went abroad; February, 732; March, 790; April, 1,639; and May, 1,446.

The top 10 destinations of the workers are the following: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia; United Arab Emirates; Kuwait; Qatar; Brunei; Malaysia; Singapore, Seychelles; Papua New Guinea; and Bahrain.

The individuals came from the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga Sibugay, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Bellotindos said.
