THE City Government of Zamboanga and the Department of Education (DepEd) forged a memorandum of agreement (MOA) for the creation of two new national high schools in the city.

Mayor Celso Lobregat and City Division of Schools officer-in-charge Pedro Melchor Natividad signed the MOA Wednesday after the program commemorating the 115th Independence Day celebration.

The two national high schools are the Pasonanca National High School, five kilometers north of this city and the Tulungatung National High School, 17 kilometers west of this city.

The City Government shall provide the lot equivalent to at least 10,000 square meters or one hectare as school site for each of the two schools and to appropriate an initial funds of P12.4 million -- P6 million for Pasonanca and P6.4 million for Tulungatung -- for the construction of the school buildings and other expenses as stipulated under the MOA.

The local government will also finance the maintenance and operations expenses of the two schools for the first five years until will be included in the General Appropriations Act of the national budget.

Lobregat said the construction for the two-storey six-classroom building for the Tulungatung National High School worth P6.1 million is ongoing since there is already a one-hectare lot donated for the school site.

In the case of Pasonanca National High School, Lobregat said the school will temporarily be housed at the Pasonanca Elementary School since they have yet to find a school site.

Lobregat said the creation of the two new schools is aimed to bring education closer to the students, adding that it would also lessen the expenses of the parents in sending their children to school.

Natividad said there are already 340 enrollees at Pasonanca National High School and 95 at Tulungatung National High School.

Natividad said six eight teachers will be assigned to Pasonanca while six to Tulungatung starting school year 2013-2014. (Bong Garcia)
