Zamboanga sets hip-hop, cheerdance competition

FOURTEEN groups have registered to participate in the City Government initiated cheerdance and hip-hop dance competitions in Zamboanga City.

The competitions, which are set Thursday at the Mayor Vitaliano Agan Coliseum, heat up the activities that lead to the 76th Dia de la Ciudad de Zamboanga on February 26.

A statement released by City Hall last Tuesday stated that nine of the 14 groups have registered for the hip-hop dance contest while the cheer dance will have five competing groups.


The hip-hop competition must showcase the artistry and technique of the dance based on the event's guidelines.

Creativity, showmanship and artistic freedom are always rewarded provided integrity, good taste and safety are not compromised.

The most captivating hip-hop routines contain a variety of dance styles, original moves, showmanship and engaging music.

The contestants will be judged according to the following criteria and point value: choreography, which includes dance arrangements and concept, 20 percent; theme and music for musicality, best technique, synchronization, timing, moves related to music, 20 percent; originality, incorporating unique and original creative moves, 20 percent; and performance for entertainment value, crowd appeal, staging, spacing formation and level, 40 percent or for a total of 100 percent.

The crews must abide by the eligibility rules of critical breakdown Jam-Hip-Hop Dance Competition, which is an "open" category.

The crews have to undergo an audition and be screened before elevating to the next step to compete in hip-hop dance finals.

Each entry should have a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 15 members who may either be composed of all males or females or a combination of both.

Meanwhile, the five competing groups for the cheerdance competition include the (Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) Juggernauts of the WMSU College of Nursing; the Hawks Pep Squad of the WMSU College of Engineering and Technology; the CME Sailors Squad of the Zamboanga State College of Marine Sciences and Technology; the ZCHS Phoenix Pep Squad of the Zamboanga City High School-Main; and the Ateneo RNM.
