THREE New People’s Army (NPA) rebels died while three soldiers were wounded as firefight ensued Wednesday between government troops and NPAs in Zamboanga del Sur, a top military official reported Thursday.

Major General Ricardo Rainier Cruz III, Army 1st Infantry Division commander, said the firefight happened around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday in the village of Mate, Tigbao town.

Cruz said the troops from the 4th Scout Ranger Battalion were conducting security patrol when they chanced upon and clash with a group of NPA rebels.

The NPA rebels belong to Section Committee Kara and the Main Regional Guerilla Unit which are both under the NPA’s Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee under Ka Natan and Ka Elyong, Cruz said.

The NPA rebels fled as they were outmaneuvered by the troops leaving behind their three slain comrades.

The remains were turned over to the local government officials for identification and eventual turnover to their families.

The troops have recovered three high-powered firearms -- AK-47, M-14 and M1 Garand rifles -- from the possession of the slain rebels.

Meanwhile, Cruz has directed the area military commanders to attend for the needs of the wounded soldiers and likewise secure the safety of the civilians in Zamboanga del Sur.

Cruz revealed that the clash erupted when the troops received reports from civilians about the presence of the NPA rebels in the area.
