Business expansion, upgrade orientation set

THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is inviting businessmen to attend a two-day 2015 Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (Setup) orientation for the region next month.

DOST Regional Director Brenda Nazareth-Manzano said the orientation will be held on February 12 in Zamboanga and in nearby Isabela City, the capital of Basilan, on February 13.

Manzano said the orientation aims to help the businessmen to expand or upgrade their business.


Manzano said the orientation is open to any micro, small and medium scale business firm that is under the following priority sectors: food processing; gifts, housewares, decors; marine and aquatic resources; horticulture and agriculture; metals and engineering; health products and services/pharmaceuticals; and, information communication technology/electronics.

She said the Setup program is a nationwide strategy to adopt technology innovations to improve boost the productivity and competitiveness of micro, small, medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Through the program, the MSMEs can address technical and production problems through DOST interventions such as: system improvement -- upgrading of equipment to improve productivity; product development -- better product quality; manpower development -- training on the operation and maintenance of equipment, basic sanitation and hygiene and good manufacturing practices; and, process improvement -- technical consultancy on proper plant lay-outing.

She advised the businessmen interested in attending the orientation to confirm their attendance on or before February 9 to Rey Bongga or Julius Marl Barbas through telephone number (062)991-1024.

Manzano said the DOST regional office has assisted 191 companies with interventions totaling P118.19 million in its 14 years of implementing Setup program in the region. (Bong Garcia)
