ZAMBOANGA City Hog Raisers Association (ZCHRA) president Eric Harina has called on the local business community to invest into the livestock industry, particularly piggery, saying there is a bright prospect in such kind of business.

Harina made the call Friday, citing there is a ready market since the local hog raisers, to include the "backyard raisers," could not cope with the daily demand of the local market.

Harina said the demand of the local consumers ranges from 90 to 100 hogs daily of 80 kilos each.

He said, though, that they can only supply 50 percent of the daily demand of the local meat consumers.

Seventy percent of the 50 percent is being supplied by backyard raisers, while the remaining 30 percent by the ZCHRA, the members of which comprises of piggery owners.

He said his association has 18 members who are also into poultry business.

Harina said the remaining 50 percent of the local market's demand of pig meat are being supplied by the hog raisers from Zamboanga Sibugay, Pagadian City, and from as far as General Santos City.

"This situation is an opportunity for local businessmen to invest in hog raising business," he said.

Harina said it is advantageous to invest in piggery business, citing "the farm gate price is high" and stable at P110 to P112 per kilo aside from the ready market.

Harina was the guest during the "Issues in the News," a weekly public affairs program of the Zamboanga Press Club Inc. (Bong Garcia)
