Eastern Visayas grabs 20 SCUAA medals in Dapitan

ATHLETES from Eastern Visayas who participated in the recent national State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Meet have brought home two gold medals, 12 silver medals and six bronze medals, or a total of 20 medals.

According to Erlinda Astillo, sports director of the Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), the region had won gold medals in the Taekwando men (bantamweight division) and in the Taekwando women (welterweight division).

The gold medal winners were Ronald Raga of the University of Eastern Philippines (UEP) and Joan Cesista of the Eastern Samar State University (ESSU), she said.

Rhyzel Maureen Figer, of the EVSU document eligibility and transportation office, said the following were the winners from the region during the national SCUAA Meet on February 17-23, 2013 in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte:

In Taekwondo (men), Ronald Raga from the University of Eastern Philippines (UEP) won a gold medal in Bantam weight division; Fritz Latoja of EVSU got a silver medal in heavyweight division, while the bronze medalist in heavyweight division was Christopher Henderson from Eastern Samar State University (ESSU).

For Taekwondo women, Joan Cesista from (ESSU) won a gold medal in the welterweight division; Anna Mae Cesnero from EVSU got a silver medal in lightweight division; and Patricia Lorzano of EVSU won a silver medal in the lightweight division. Their coach was Frederico Suyot Jr. of ESSU.

Badminton men: Silver medalist from ESSU were two players, Timoteo Barbo and Joey Almejas, and from EVSU, Mark Gagua, and from VSU was Wilmar Alfeche. Their coach was Shirwin Amosco of ESSU.

Lawn Tennis men: Silver medalist from LNU were Marlon Barbo and Fiel Dequito, and from VSU, Nolan Centino, and from SLSU, Daarlon Labistida.

Athletics men: In 3,000-kilometer staple chase. Bronze medal was won by Narceso Deterala from the Visayas State University (VSU); 100-meter run, bronze medal - Rommel Gabieta of Samar State University (SSU).

Athletics women: Ma. Christina Babon of Leyte Normal University (LNU), who ran in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, and 400-meter dash got bronze medals in these three events.

In Javelin throw: Sheila Baong of Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) won a silver medal.

For the Miss SCUAA, Gretchen Bemis Gler of the Naval State University placed second runner-up, while Rick Palencia of same school won the best in festival costume and the best in swim wear. Their coaches were Elfred Olaer and Ciriaco Narrido. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
