ASSISTANT Minority Floor Leader and Leyte 1st district Representative Ferdinand Martin “FM” Romualdez will replace Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. as president of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) in preparation for his bid for speakership in the next Congress.

Maguindanao Representative Simeon Datumanong, vice chairman of the once-dominant ruling party, bared this in an interview with members of the media.

Datumanong said Lakas-CMD will call a meeting to elect Romualdez as president while incumbent president Revilla will be promoted as chairman of the party.

“We will call a meeting to elect Congressman Romualdez as the new party president. He is a young, dynamic and a talented leader that can push the party’s interests. Senator Revilla will be promoted chairman,” Datumanong said.

Datumanong added that Romualdez, a lawyer and a banker, is the logical choice to replace Revilla as he is one of the leaders of the opposition in the House of Representatives.

“Members of the party were already informed of the plan and support for Romualdez is overwhelming. This is also in preparation for the Leyte congressman’s bid to run as Speaker in the 16th Congress,” Datumanong said.

Just recently, Romualdez was endorsed by the minority bloc to be the chairman of House ethics committee, which was left vacant by the demise of Bohol Representative Erico Aumentado.

A vacuum in leadership was felt by Lakas-CMD after Albay Representative Edcel Lagman resigned as chairman and opted to run as independent in the May 2013 election.

Romualdez is unopposed in his third and last term as representative of the 1st district of Leyte. (Leyte Samar Daily Express)
