Seminar workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction Management

IN RESPONSE to the call of the National Government and the Department of Education on shared accountability, a seminar- workshop on Mainstreaming Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction Management was conducted in Ramon Magsaysay Elementary School, New Lucban, Baguio City on July 5 and 12, 2014 with the teachers and school heads of Alfonso Tabora Elem. School, Ramon Magsaysay Elem. School and Magsaysay National High School as participants.

The seminar workshop aims to enhance the teachers on the basic knowledge on disaster preparedness and to review their respective disaster plans and the school’s improvement plan in relation to handling different situations in times of calamities.

The seminar was timely because July of every year is considered as the National Disaster Conscious Month with the theme:" Kahandaan at Kaligtasan ng Pamayanan Pundasyon ng Kaunlaran.” The activity is supported by Republic Act No. 10121 of 2010 which provides for legal basis for policies plans and programs to deal with disasters. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Plan (NDRRMP) covers four thematic areas namely 1) Disaster prevention 2) Disaster Preparedness 3) Disaster Response and 4) Disaster Rehabilitation and Recovery.


During the two day seminar- workshop, the teachers were given lectures on first aid, basic life support and incident command system which are some of the crucial aspects in handling actual situations during disasters. The participants were also given the chance to conduct bandaging, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and how to deal with choked patients.

The speakers headed by Louie Glenn Lardizabal, the Officer In-Charge of the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) together with Buencamino Atienza, Assistant Trainer on Emergency Response, Raybyrd Gegway and Kenneth Khayog. The group is going around the different schools and barangays to train the Baguio resident on disaster preparedness.

A simulation activity on earthquake drill was given to the participants, after which was evaluated to redirect the responding team. The earthquake drill made everybody realized the importance of having a contingency plan with a strong Incident Command System to facilitate beneficial responses the soonest possible.

The seminar-workshop enlightened the participants on the basic knowledge on how to respond to emergency cases related to disaster. This is of great help in performing their mission not only to teach or facilitate in the learning process but to safeguard their pupils in times of calamities.

In line with the program of the CDRRMC Operation Center in guiding the different schools and barangays on emergency preparedness, Tabora Elementary School through the leadership of principal Brendalee Celino was awarded a plaque of Recognition for being the first public elementary school that prepared and submitted a Contingency Plan. Congratulations!!!
