The Good Shepherd

-A A +A

IN LAST Sunday's gospel Jesus portrays himself as our constant companion in our journey through life, in the same way that he, in his risen state, walked with two disciples on the road to Emmaus. He is the companion who never leaves us, who reveals himself in the Scriptures, and who allows us to recognize him in the breaking of the bread.

In this Sunday's gospel and psalms, Jesus introduces himself as the good shepherd and the gracious host. As good shepherd, he takes good care of us, his sheep, in ways that no other shepherd could do or equal. To show us his ultimate love, he laid down his life for his sheep.

If he is indeed our shepherd, there is nothing that we shall lack. Jesus, our God, is the Great Provider. He is the all-sufficient God who owns everything in heaven and on earth, and who could create something from nothing. His will is always to give the best to his sheep? To make them graze in the greenest of pastures.

The good shepherd leads us to still waters. In the various storms of life, he is our refuge. He is our rock, our fortress and our strong tower. Yes, sometimes we fall, but he always lifts us up and restores in us our dignity as children of God.

If we only listen to the voice of Jesus and put our full trust in him, we can be assured that he will always lead our steps to the right path. Like a shepherd protecting his sheep from predators and robbers through his rod, Jesus shields us from the attacks of the greatest thief, murderer and destroyer of all times? The devil. And like a shepherd redirecting a wandering sheep through his staff, Jesus calls us back whenever we are lost in sin. Yes, indeed, so great is his love and care that even when we walk through the darkest valley, we need not fear, for "greater is he who is in us than he who is of this world" (1 John 4:4).

Are we ready to listen to our good shepherd? "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts…" (Hebrews 3:15)
