Showbiz Love

-A A +A

I AM a local showbiz fan and would be among the first moviegoers on the first day showing of the annual filmfest.

Some years ago I was embarrassed to be the only adult patron amid popcorn-munching little tots in a downtown theater who shouted, got scared and excited with the intrepid and deathless Panday.

I like the romance comedies which leading ladies include the prettiest faces in the industry. Keeping abreast with showbiz news is one of my tacky pastimes.

Talk shows, newspaper entertainment sections and tabloid gossips provide up to date (dis) information about showbiz celebrities and their love life.

New love affairs excite the fans, break-ups are intriguing. When the beautiful people fall from their high perch, there is some rejoicing, a kind of schaudenfreude from the commoners.

How the concerned partners deal with their pain and heartache is the gist that feed the rumor mills.

I have learned that women in general, and in this case our actresses, desire a stability in relationships which is marriage.

But our young and popular male actors are practising escape artists. A mere hint of a wedding with Jennylyn Mercado for instance frightened even a hotshot lover like Luis Manzano who prefers to enjoy his prolonged bachelorhood with Angel Locsin.

It is not so with the woman who aspire to get married at some point in her romantic life. Most often a break up is the result of infidelity. If a young boy gets tired of riding the same expensive bicycle after a time, the actor-lover gets bored of the same sexual routine even with the loveliest girl at hand. This is the risk that is threatening Heart Evangelista with Sen. Chiz, her lover.

Local newspapers chronicled the love affairs of the more important people in showbiz. We have emphatized with the singer Karylle when Dingdong Dantes left her for Marian Rivera. The fans felt vicarious pain after John Lloyd Cruz ditched Shaina Magdayao for Angelica Panganiban; the same with KC Concepcion who broke up with Piolo Pascual, and Sunshine Cruz abandoned by Cesar Montano for a younger girl.

Scores of other filmdom celebrities, Kris Aquino among them, who wanted stability and fidelity in relationships, had figured in painful and damaging breakups.

Do men recover faster after breakups or is it the women? Heavy drinking, furious driving, vigorous sports are the coping devices of the men. Include drugs, gambling, and womanizing as back-up options.

It appears that while women shed interminable tears, the men (the aggrieved party) feel the pain more deeply. While women seek advice and comfort from their families and friends, the men keep their heartache to themselves. A display of pain is unmanly and a sign of weakness.

From my understanding of the celebrities with unforgettable and lingering heartbreak, their common refuge is in the statement, “I have moved on. Pero friends pa rin kami.”

There is no true friendship between partners severed by conflict and hate. The ugly truth is, after a long satisfying sexual relationship, the woman truly misses sizzling romance when the affair ended. Love is no longer in her system but sex is an ember that burns when not attended.
