The Visits

"KAPAG ayaw may dahilan, at kapag gusto may paraan."

It is a common saying in Pilipino. Loosely translated it means if you so desire, there are ways, but if you don't, there are always advanced reasons.

This may apply on the existing relationship between a former president and an incumbent one. It is about former President and now Congresswoman Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and President Benigno Aquino III. Take note that both are Kapampangans.

For some years now, GMA is detained at the Veterans Memorial Hospital. She was not even allowed a Christmas furlough, a chance to hug her grandkids, and bond with husband Atty. Mike. Very un-Christian, commented many.

Former Presidents Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada visited her. So was Imelda Marcos. Recently some bishops visited and celebrated the Holy Mass for the ailing former chief executive. Her spokesman, lawyer Raul Lambino was quoted as saying that her health is deteriorating. The former is no longer young, and older people are prone to ailments, more so if they are stressed.

No. President Noynoy will not visit her, nor lift a finger to ask the Sandiganbayan and just place her under house arrest. She is not a flight risk with her medical condition. They can even surround with platoon of soldiers her house in La Vista Subdivision in Quezon City.

If this will be done, it will relieve her anguish, save her from her failing health and the Christians among us will appreciate the gesture.

But it seems nobody can persuade the bachelor President, not even her conscience. The continued cold shoulder treatment is not appreciated.

When then President Estrada was convicted with plunder and detained, then President GMA made some visits, and even allowed him to get medical attention in Hong Kong.

When then Senator Ninoy Aquino, the President's father was ailing, he was allowed by the then dictatorship to seek medical attention in the United States.

History should teach us lessons. Nobody stays on top forever. What goes around comes around, so the saying goes.

Many of our provincemates appreciated the kind gestures of those visits to GMA. Those short visits might have relieved her pain now that she is suffering from this incredible difficult period in her life.

I used to tell my friends at Monday Club and Wednesday Club that life has its ups and downs. The Yin and Yang philosophy of the Chinese. If there is night, there is day. If there is happiness, there is sadness. It cannot all be night and it cannot be all sadness. It cannot be all day, and it cannot all be night.

GMA never imagined in her growing years at Malacanang when her father was President that she will spend time incarcerated and ridiculed by a succeeding president.

Noynoy Aquino never imagined in his growing years when his dad was imprisoned in a dark room of a military camp in Nueva Ecija that he would soon become president, completing the failed dream of Ninoy.

I wish one day President Noynoy can listen to a song themed 'you don't have to walk on waters' which is about the power of forgiveness, and hope it will move him.
