WOMEN of today play multifarious roles in our society. Gone are the days when they only apply makeup on their faces and let the day pass without doing something different for the community. Gone are the days when they stayed only at home to did domestic chores, and attended to the family’s needs.

There are some women who at times and in some circumstances are far better than men at that they do. I admit to that fact. There are instances when they can do better than their male counterparts, be it at home, at work or at play.

Not so many Filipino women are part of our history; those who became are those who fought for their causes to death, way back then.

With due respect, there are women considered weaklings in the olden times. Rights and privileges between the two sexes were likewise different. Men mostly dominated almost everything, even in war. There were women though who held swords and guns on their hands to engage in a man’s game.

Some men then treated women as second-class citizens, less deserving of recognition and appreciation. They did not give high regard to women who excelled and outsmarted men. Whatever they achieved under their sleeves, women were less appreciated and unsung.

During the old times, there were many things that men were allowed to but taboo for women. There were matters told only to men but not to the opposite sex. It may be secrecy or sheer discrimination.

We may call it cruel, but the old times seemed to be biased against women. The men were always the privileged and the women were often kept at closets and are mere domestic objects.

Time has passed and women slowly but surely asserted their rights. Women learned to invoke things that are used to be exclusively and unfairly for men only. They have likewise proven to the society that they can do things and that they can sometimes do it better than men.

Soon, women were at par, if not fared better, than men. There are times they can do things that men can’t. Sometimes, they can undo things men have done.

Our women of today can be found anywhere. They achieve, attain and accomplish different things and in almost aspects of life. In workplaces, they can perform well, sometimes much better than men.

There are women that fight in the battlefields. There are women atop high-rise construction sites. There are women leaders who are better shepherds to their flocks.

We men perhaps fail to note that there are instances that we are overtaken by women in various fields and endeavors, or maybe we have noticed but cannot simply admit the fact.

This national women’s month, I give my grandest salute to our women of today. Aside from their achievements, attainments and accomplishments, they need accolades too in recognition of their contributions to our world.

Happy women’s month to them!
