CITY OF SAN FERNANDO – Mayor Edwin Santiago and Vice-Mayor Jimmy Lazatin, together with officials of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office recently awarded model groups and villages for their best practices on ecological solid waste management.

In simple ceremonies at Heroes Hall, cited as model schools were Pampanga High School, St. Scholastica's Academy, San Juan South Elementary School, St. Vincent of Quebiawan Integrated School and Nuestra Senora Del Pilar Integrated School.

The model homeowners associations are Gemsville 1 in Barangay Dolores, Pilar Village in Barangay San Isidro and Homeland II in Barangay Alasas.

The cleanest and litter-ree barangay award went to Barangay Malino; best system of collection to Barangay Maimpis; beautification award to Barangay Pandaras; and best ecological solid waste management information and education campaign to Barangay Juliana.

According to Senior Environmental Management Specialist Marilen Malabanan, the criteria in selecting the winners include soundsolid waste management, ordinances regarding the implementation of RA 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act, the operations of materials recovery facilities and if the barangay has a solid waste management committee.

“The biggest percentage that we are considering is the households evaluation where we conduct a random sampling of 50 houses per barangay and check if their garbage is properly segregated,” said Malabanan.

The awards were in partnership with Mother Earth foundation and part of the celebration of National Environment Month.
