CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The City Social Welfare and Development Office conducted a seminar on early detection of autism at the Hereos Hall recently.
The seminar, dubbed Early Detection and Intervention Disability Seminar, focused on detection of symptoms of possible disability among the children through careful observation including diagnosis and handling of patients with the help of institutions.
Maria Joyla Ofrecia, resource speaker and president of Autism Society Philippines Pampanga chapter, said autism carries many complications that people do not understand.
"The manifestation revolves around communication and social skills deficit and also adaptation and repetitive behaviors are some of the symptoms that a child has autism," said Ofrecia.
She also added that the behavioral manifestations of autism can be observed and confirmed as early as the age of three. However, there are also instances that these behaviors can be detected and observed at the age of two, according to her.
In the seminar, she also taught parents, teachers and other social workers on how to communicate and adapt to the situations of children with special character.
She said that these children require extra and careful observation because what they possess is a more complicated thing.
“Austism is combination of different conditions so a child can have a characteristic of an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD, intellectual disability and communication disorder, this is the ultimate disability because it’s already a combination of every other disorder,” she said.
Ofrecia also said that autism cannot be prevented nor cured but said that children can be trained, because autism is a permanent condition or lifelong disorder. (Marionne I. Cayanan)
