CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- Governor Lilia Pineda on Monday urged Capitol employees to be “every day heroes” by serving Kapampangans with dedication, honesty, and love.

The Provincial Government led by Governor Pineda took the lead in commemorating the 116th anniversary of Independence Day themed "Pagsunod sa Yapak ng mga Dakilang Pilipino, Tungo sa Malawakan at Permanenteng Pagbabago" at the Capitol grounds during the Monday flag-raising rites.

"As public servants we are obliged to remain honest and transparent always, regardless of status or rank. Everybody can be a hero by serving the people through hard work, dedication and selflessness," she said.

The governor also stressed the importance of remembering the sacrifices and patriotism of the country’s heroes to achieve national sovereignty.
She said this generation owes to the national heroes and the nation for the freedom enjoyed today.

“Public servants should not forget that it is the people---Kapampangans in particular---who have brought each one into office and that the sacrifices of heroes who fought for our freedom should be emulated,” she said.

The governor together with former presidential daughter Luli Arroyo-Bernas, members of the provincial board led by Board Members Cris Garbo, Cherry Manalo, Arthur Salalila, Salvador Dimson, Jr., Anthony Joseph Torres, Teddy Tumang, Nestor Tolentino and Ricardo Yabut, Provincial Administrator Andres Pangilinan, Jr. and department heads of the Capitol graced the flag-raising ceremony, wreath laying and flying of balloons at Arnedo Park yesterday.

Arroyo-Bernas, for her part said that before 1962, Philippine Independence was celebrated on July 4.

“It was my grandfather, former President Diosdado Macapagal who moved the Independence Day celebration from July 4 to June 12 through Proclamation No. 28 signed on May 12, 1962, to recognize the declaration of Independence by Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo in 1898,” she said.

Arroyo-Bernas added that after the declaration of President Macapagal of the country’s Independence Day or “Araw ng Kalayaan” to June 12, the succeeding Philippine government leaders honored the date up to this day.
