CLARK FREEPORT -- Pampanga Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (PDRRM) Officer Angeline Blanco bared the current state of the province's disaster risk reduction management (DRRM) during a summit held in this Freeport Thursday.
According to Blanco, disaster preparedness has been one of the major concerns of the province since the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo.
"Since the Mt. Pinatubo eruption, flooding has been a regular occurrence at particular sites in Pampanga. Waterways and rivers were silted and more coastal areas were inhabited by evacuees from the eruption," she said.
Blanco emphasized that the disaster preparedness of the province is essential in preventing damage to more lives and properties.
After the reorganization of PDRRMO under Republic Act 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act of 2013, the Capitol's effort to prepare for disaster "has been intense," she said.
Blanco reported that the PDRRMO for the past years has acquired various machineries, equipment and tools to be used for emergency response and rescue missions.
Aside from the equipment, PDRRMO also purchased heavy vehicles, military and fire trucks, quick response/service vehicles, boats, rafts and motors, along with other life-saving equipment such as tents, fire and scuba suits for the rescue team and communication sets.
Blanco also disclosed that different seminars and trainings in government offices, hospitals, schools and private establishments have been conducted by the PDRRMO, including earthquake and fire drills, rescue training and basic first aid.
Blanco stressed that the PDRRMO is currently desilting rivers and waterways in the province, information dissemination campaigns and sand bagging.
During the summit, Office of Civil Defense Regional Director Josefina Timoteo lauded the Pampanga PDRRMO for its tireless effort in disaster preparedness, and for being recognized as the Best Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Region 3 of the national DRRMC Kalasag awards, beating Bulacan as the record-holder.
