CITY OF SAN FERNANDO--Vice Mayor Jimmy Lazatin called on education stakeholders on Sunday to make public schools in this capital city disaster ready in line with the objectives of the recently concluded Department of Education's (DepEd) “Brigada Eskwela” campaign.

Lazatin urged teachers, parents and government officials to prepare schools from disasters that affected the entire country in 2013.

In Department of Education Memorandum No. 32, series of 2014, Education Secretary Armin Luistro said that the annual schools maintenance week for this year should be more on “developing disaster-resilient school communities." In his memorandum, Luistro said that this year’s focus aims to “to ease the schools’ vulnerability to both natural and human-made disasters.”

Lazatin said that while the Brigada Eskwela program is over, teachers, parents and the concern sectors should not stop in making schools disaster ready. He said cleaning classrooms is merely the start of the initiative and that schools should implement disaster response plans and set measures to ensure that faculty and students have the proper response to disasters.

"Facilities should be constructed and repaired so as to be able to withstand calamities like earthquake and typhoons," Lazatin said, urging school officials to address to government officials their concerns in making school facilities and surroundings disaster ready.

Lazatin said that the neighborhood where schools are located should also be taken into consideration in making disaster plans. He added that the local barangay are urged to fix drainage systems and other facilities near school buildings to complement disaster response initiatives taken by school officials.
