MAKATI CITY -- The Philippine Press Institute (PPI) is currently urging member publications in the provinces to help in setting up more press councils across the country during the organization's weekend conference at the Traders Hotel here.

The event was attended by officers from regional and provincial newspapers including Sun.Star Pampanga.

This is part of the PPI’s intensified efforts to step up to specific challenges confronting the media today, a statement added.

At the 18th National Press Forum held on May 1, PPI chair and president lawyer Jesus Dureza announced the allocation of P200,000 to support specific activities that will facilitate the creation of press councils.

Member newspapers will have to meet certain criteria to qualify for PPI’s funding support for the creation of press councils.

Among others, they must be active PPI members and show potential for steering a local prospective council toward the fulfillment of its mandate.

Press councils will serve as grievance redress mechanisms for the public alongside specific sectors of society who have issues or complaints involving the media.
