CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Kapampangan independent film "Dukit" is nominated in at least 10 categories in this year's 37th Gawad Urian Awards.

This was announced by president Grace Javier Alfonso, National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera, and Mario Hernando of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino. Most of the nominees in this year's awards are independent films.

"Dukit" is nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Bor Ocampo), Best Supporting Actress (Raquel Villavicencio), Best Direction (Bing Lao), Best Screenplay (Bing Lao), Best Production Design, Best Music, Best Cinematography, Best Editing and Best Sound.

"Dukit," the Kapampangan word for woodcarving, is centered on the region's culture: its arts, crafts, food, music, values and traditions. It is the latest film of Lao, an acclaimed screenwriter.

The story is about a celebrated Kapampangan sculptor, Willy Layug, who is embittered by how the father abandoned his family for another woman. It takes him years and success to learn to forgive the old man.

It was judged as Best New Wave Film and New Wave Best Picture in the 39th Metro Manila Film Festival in 2013.

The film also bagged the Best New Wave Film Director for Armando Lao and New Wave Best Actor for Bor Ocampo, Layug and Bambalito Lacap who portrayed the three generations of the main character.

Layug said that the recent developments with the nominations at the 37th Gawad Urian Awards only shows the quality of the film to be at par with other films in the country.

"The mere fact that Dukit got nominated is already an honor for us who have been in the whole production of the film. We hope that this recent development will be a source of pride for Kapampangans," Layug said.

The 37th Gawad Urian awards will be hosted by Piolo Pascual, Bianca Gonzalez, and Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino member Butch Francisco, and will air on June 17, 10:00 p.m. at Cinema One channel, a statement from the award body said.
