CLARK FREEPORT -- Leonardo Ramos, an Aeta from Madapdap resettlement in Mabalacat City, has finished his engineering course at Angeles University Foundation. He graduated cum laude.

Ramos is one of the 40 members of the Aeta cultural minority tribe who were given the privilege to study at AUF via scholarships granted by the Clark Development Corporation (CDC).

He is now employed at the American-owned semiconductor firm Texas Instruments, at this Freeport.

Sonny Lopez, external affairs chief of the CDC, said that when the scholarship program started in 2001, some 87 Aetas were granted the scholarships. However, 43 of them dropped out of school.

Lopez disclosed that four more Aetas will be graduating this school year: Aris Gambao, a BS Criminology student; Arriane dela Cruz, taking up BS Accountancy; and Joel Billar and Roseanne David, both taking up BS Elementary Education.

“The scholarship program is part of the corporate social responsibility of the state-owned firm for the indigenous people within the contiguous area of the Freeport zone,” Lopez said.

At least three Aeta scholars have migrated to the US and five are working in the Middle East, while others found jobs inside the Clark Freeport, he said. (Fergie H. Fabian)
