CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- A Salesian priest is on his way to sainthood, and the Diocesan inquiry on his canonization opens today in this city.

The opening session of the Diocesan Inquiry to the Cause of Canonization of the Servant of God, Fr. Carlo Braga, SDB, will be the main highlight of the 10 a.m. Eucharistic Celebration in honor of St. John Bosco at the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Archdiocese of San Fernando Pampanga.

The celebration will be presided over by Archbishop Paciano Aniceto.

St. John Bosco, whose feast day is celebrated today, was the founder of the religious congregation Salesians of Don Bosco, wherein Fr. Braga was a professed member.

Fr. Braga, born in 1889 and ordained to the priesthood in 1914, arrived in the Philippines in 1953 to be the Rector of Don Bosco Victorias.

After 65 years of his profession as a Salesian and 57 years in the priesthood, he died in 1971 in Bacolor, Pampanga where he was staying both as a Confessor and Director for the Salesians and its aspirants.

Forty-two years after Fr. Braga’s death, the Salesian community in the Philippines filed a petition for his beatification, honoring the priest’s heroic virtues, especially in his years of service in the Philippines.

In a memoir written by Fr. Braga in 1962, he stated, “I am not accustomed to making prophecies, but I believe that it will be precisely from the Philippines that groups of missionaries will depart to bring the light of the gospel to their Asian brothers.”

The “nihil obstat,” (which means “nothing stands on the way of the process”) or the permission for the beatification and canonization, has already been signed January 31 last year, although the closing of the Diocesan Inquiry has not been determined yet. The “supplex libellus” (humble petition) for introducing the Cause for Fr. Braga has been presented on February 9, 2011. (Fergie H. Fabian)
