CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- While Capitol has started desilting and declogging of major Pampanga waterways early, Governor Lilia Pineda said over the weekend that she has ordered barangay officials to submit immediately their comprehensive disaster preparedness plans.

Pineda said that weather disturbances like Tropical Depression Agaton, which came at the onset of the year call for early and more comprehensive preparations.

“Because of climate change and unpredictable weather, there is this need for our officials, starting at the barangay level, to prepare early and come up with their respective disaster plans which will be consolidated by our Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office headed by Angie Blanco. Maaga ang bagyo ngayon kaya dapat, mas handa tayo,” she said.

The governor said that Capitol is fast-tracking evacuation and relocation centers, like those in Telapayong, Arayat and another site in Floridablanca.

“Together with the National Housing Authority, we have allocated funds for that. I have also asked our officials at Capitol to study how we can help barangays with small internal revenue allotments because we have savings from our calamity fund of nearly P100 million,” said Pineda.

She added that aside from the present inventory of equipment and calamity-response resources, the provincial government is poised to purchase an additional ten backhoes on barge.

“Kailangan talaga ng ayuda ng ating mga barangays, lalo na iyong nasa coastal towns. Mas maaga tayong makapaghanda sa kalamidad, mas maganda,” concluded the governor. (JTD)
