MACABEBE, Pampanga—A barangay chairman was shot dead by motorcycle-riding gunmen on Wednesday.
Chief Inspector John Lopez Clark, Macabebe chief of police, identified the victim as Danilo Manalang, 60, married and incumbent barangay chairman of barangay San Jose of this town.
Reports said that at around 12:00 noon Tuesday, while the victim was buying food at the canteen with his companions when the suspect, armed with caliber .45 handgun, arrived and shot the village chief three times at close-range.
Clark told Sun.Star Pampanga that the lone gunman was wearing a bonnet and clad with a black jacket.
The suspect immediately fled and boarded a getaway motorcycle towards the direction of barangay San Rafael with an unidentified companion.
The victim who bore three gunshot wounds was rushed to the Holy Rosary Hospital but was pronounced dead-on-arrival.
Police theorized afternoon that the motive in Manalang’s killing could have connection with his controversial victory during last year’s barangay election which he won by only 8 votes and is still under protest at the Commission on Elections.
Senior Superintendent Oscar Albayalde, Pampanga police provincial director, for his part said that he has formed the special investigation task group “Manalang,” to identify and arrest the suspect and his cohort.
He added that the task group will be headed by Superintendent Ricardo Pangan, deputy provincial director for operations. (Kristine Venet Q. Andal/With a report from Ric Sapnu/Sun.Star Pampanga)
