ANGELES CITY -- Investigators are facing a blank wall in the killing of a barangay chairman here.

Senior Superintendent Eden Ugale, city police director, said that no lead has been established on the killing of Santo Cristo chairman Efren Dela Cruz because the witness refused to coordinate with investigators.

"Ala ke pang lead. E’ na la bisang mag-testify retang witness," Ugale said.

Dela Cruz, a long-time Liga ng mga Barangay (ABC) President, was shot dead by two gunmen on December 1, 2013 after going to a derby at the Angeles City Cockpit Arena in Barangay Claro M. Recto.

The city police however produced a computer-generated photograph of one of the suspects.

The closest motive in the killing is robbery. But police officials said they are still looking at other motives including politics.

Dela Cruz was about to board his car around 10:20 p.m. on said date when two men assaulted him.

The victim reportedly told his political allies before the last barangay elections on October 29 that he had received death threats.

Mabalacat City Vice Mayor Christian Halili told Sun.Star Pampanga earlier that Dela Cruz encountered a drug and criminal syndicate before he was killed.

Dela Cruz is a close ally of former Congressman Carmelo “Tarzan” Lazatin.

The village chief recently received citations and awards from the Department of Interior and Local Government for his programs on transparency and good governance.
