ANGELES CITY -- A lawmaker said on Tuesday he is planning to retire from politics following his defeat in the mayoral race here.

"Magre-retire na tayo sa pulitika, matanda na rin tayo. Ipapaubaya na natin sa mga susunod (na nanunungkulan) ang pagseserbisyo sa bayan (I am retiring from politics, I've aged anyway. We'll leave public service to the next leaders)," the 78-year-old Representative Carmelo Lazatin said.

In a radio interview, he said he has accepted his loss to incumbent Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan.

"Meron pa tayong dalawang buwan bilang kongresista at pagkatapos nun ay bababa na tayo at magiging private citizen na muli (We still have two months as a congressman and after that, we will be stepping down from public office and go back to being a private citizen)," he said.

Lazatin asked Pamintuan to realize his promises to the people of Angeles.

"Kino-congratulate natin siya (sa pagkakahalal niyang muli). The people have spoken, dapat igalang natin ang hatol ng bayan (I congratulate him. We must respect the decision of the people)," Lazatin said.

He thanked his supporters for their help in his mayoralty bid.

Lazatin also congratulated congressman-elect Joseller Guiao, the incumbent vice governor of Pampanga.

"Sa palagay ko naman ay magiging magaling na congressman si Yeng (I think Yeng will make a good congressman)," he said. (Reynaldo G. Navales)
