STO. TOMAS -- Mayor Joselito Naguit of this town thanked over the weekend the regional office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for the ongoing works at the San Fernando-Minalin-Tail Dike.

Several villages in the town of Santo Tomas were submerged with floodwaters after the dike was breached during the heavy rains brought about by southwest monsoon last year.

Naguit expressed appreciation over the action of the DPWH, especially with the projected completion of rehabilitation works in April this year, which according to Engr. Arnold Ocampo will be fast-tracked to late February until early March.

"We at Sto. Tomas are very happy about the progress of rehabilitation works at the vital Sto. Tomas portions and other critical areas of the tail dike, much that they are being undertaken before the rainy season. This gives some assurance against another massive flooding even as we are ever prepared and continue to be vigilant on such natural calamities," Naguit told Sun.Star Pampanga.

It was the mayor himself who stirred some 3,500 Tomasians into "bayanihan," when they sandbagged and implemented palliative measures when conditions at the tail dike hampered full rehabilitation like filling, sheet piling and construction of slope protection after the Habagat in August 2012.

"Our only concern now is about the diversion channel. The DPWH could probably update that on that since the dike might overflow again during heavy downpours," he added.

Naguit also thanked Capitol led by Governor Lilia Pineda for the rehabilitation efforts and measures in the town.
