LUBAO -- Local furniture makers exporting world-class woodcraft, metal and other home furnishings are now looking at the domestic market to sustain the industry following the strengthening of the Philippine peso versus the US dollar.

Guagua Councilor Tonton Torres said Kapampangan furniture exporters remain aggressive and bullish despite the slump the industry is experiencing.

Torres in the past years has been assisting local furniture makers and woodcraft groups, leading in the conduct of trainings skilled workers in carpentry and upholstery.

“With the current situation where the peso continues to gain strength over the dollar, our furniture makers and exporters in Pampanga are looking at the domestic or local market. Actually, they have been able to make breakthroughs and are gaining headway in this because there are lot of customers in the Philippine market patronizing our furniture industry,” he said.

He added that the graduates of training programs in upholstery and carpentry have been employed by big furniture companies because of rising local demand in hotels, offices and even high-end residential developments.

“We are addressing the threats of unemployment with our continuous assistance to the furniture industry. In fact, Governor Lilia Pineda has commissioned our graduates in carpentry for the production of school desks as a response to the need of the Department of Education. We are optimistic our local furniture makers will sustain their growth amid the threats of the current economic situation as we in government are always ready to extend further assistance in their needs,” said Torres.
