CEBU CITY -- The 7.2 magnitude earthquake on October 15, 2013 and the super typhoon on November 8, 2013 could have been enough reasons for Movenpick Hotel Mactan Island in Cebu to stop the accreditation process for the Green Globe certification.

Guido Bauer, CEO of Green Globe Certification, said Movenpick could have just stopped after the two disasters considering disruptions in the system operations, but it did not and instead proceeded with the process. The Green Globe Sustainability Leadership Award was given to Movenpick recently for pioneering this international standard in Cebu and the Philippines.

Green Globe is the premier worldwide sustainability certification for the travel and tourism industry. The Green Globe Standard is considered the worldwide standard for the hospitality industry.

Guido said Movenpick is the only Green Globe certified hotel in the Philippines, meaning it is the only hotel that took sustainability seriously.

The hotel has scored in the top 15 percent of all green globe certified hotels worldwide.

Among the hotel’s sustainability programs is the use of natural ventilation and day lighting elements in order to minimize power consumption. The use of LED bulbs is another power saving element.

Guido, in an interview, said that hotels that have sustainability programs are not just cutting cost on operations but are helping educate guest on proper use of resources. He added that guests play a key role.

The hotel keeps the guests informed about ways to conserve water and energy through the use of environmental hangers in each guestroom.

Aside from proper power utilization, the hotel’s water consumption highlights its sustainability program. The hotel’s landscaped garden where the rainwater harvesting system is installed collects water for the hotel’s swimming pool.

Grey water is also used throughout the hotel’s bathroom facilities to reduce potable water consumption. (MVG)
