UNIVERSITY of the Philippines (UP) ruled the UAAP Season 77 streetdance competition with a "luksong tinik" theme on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

UP Street tallied 178 points to prevail over Company of Ateneo Dancers (167.3) and two-time titlist La Salle Dance Company-Street (167) to cop the P120,000 prize.

The event returned after a one-year absence and UP Street did not waste its opportunity to extend its reign in the fourth edition, using an array of throwback and current dance mixes.

Aside from its lively dance performance which wowed the Fighting Maroons gallery, UP Street reminded everyone about the joys of playing native games like "luksong tinik".

"Gusto naming magbigay ng bago sa mata and at the same time, ako personally panahon ko yung laro ng kalsada like yung patintero, tumbang preso and piko. Gusto ko lang balikan, kasi yung youth, mahilig sa gadgets, somehow naapektuhan yung well being ng mga bata," said coach Von Ace Asilo.

"Gusto kong maibalik yung ganitong kultura," he added.

Adamson's CAST placed fourth with 160.3 points, followed by Far Eastern University Dance Company (151.3), University of Santo Tomas Salinggawi Dance Troupe (143.7), University of the East Street Warriors (137), and National University Underdawgz (126.5).

With a remarkable mix of hip hop and electronic dance music, Ateneo achieved its best finish in the four-year competition with a clean routine, while La Salle drew inspiration from hit '90s boyband Backstreet Boys, who will be holding a concert in the same venue on May 5. (PR/Sunnex)
