JERON Teng got off to a fiery start and sustained it until the end, unloading 32 points as La Salle beat old rival Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday in the 77th UAAP men's basketball tournament before nearly 16,000 fans at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

La Salle, the defending champion, now joins Ateneo and Far Eastern University (FEU) in a three-way tie for first place with 6-2 win-loss record.

Teng, who also hauled six rebounds, calmly sank his charities with 8.1 seconds left to give the Green Archers a four-point cushion, 87-83.

Pressed to turn the game around, Ateneo's Chris Newsome dropped a triple in the next play.

But time and opportunity were just not on the side of the Blue Eagles as Almond Vosotros made one of his two free throws to ice the match.

Newsome had 15 points and five boards while Kiefer Ravena, star of the Eagles' first round win over the Archers last month, finished with 22 points, 15 coming from the second quarter where Ateneo trailed by as many as 13 points.

Ateneo soared in the third, tying the game at 61-all.

Both squads then had their last deadlock with 1:24 left in the payoff period, 81-81, before Teng, Vosotros and Jason Perkins took turns in warding off the Eagles.
