SAN Mig Super Coffee emerged the only fifth team in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) to win grandslam title, bagging the season-ending Governor’s Cup of the 39th edition at the Araneta Coliseum on Wednesday night.

The Coffee Mixers survived repeated rallies of Rain or Shine to escape a heart-pounding 92-89 victory to the delight of San Mig fans-dominated crowd.

The Elasto Painters got a chance to force an overtime after Mark Barroca missed two foul throws with 6 seconds left but import AZ Reid missed a game-tying three point shot at the buzzer.

With the Coffee Mixers, Tim Cone became the only coach in the Asia’s first professional basketball league to win two grandslam titles.

Cone won his first grandslam title with Alaska in 1996, marking his 18th title in the PBA.

"I tried to figure out how we did it. It’s a work of everybody. I’m so overwhelmed," Cone said.

Other teams that won grandslam championships were Crispa in 1976 and 1983, San Miguel Beer in 1989.

James Yap scored a game-high 29 points and was eventually adjudged final’s most valuable player (MVP) by the PBA Press Corps.

The Elasto Painters rallied from as much as 16 points, 69-53, in the third quarter but could not complete the uprising when they missed four crucial three point shots down the stretch.

The Coffee Mixers limited best import Reid to just 23 points while San Mig’s reinforcement Marcus Blakely drilled in only 20 points.

The scores:

SAN MIG SUPER COFFEE 92 - Yap 29, Blakely 20, Devance 11, Pingris 10, Simon 10, Barroca 6, Maliksi 4, Sangalang 2, Mallari 0, Reavis 0, Melton 0.

RAIN OR SHINE 89 - Reid 23, Lee 21, Almazan 11, Norwood 11, Belga 7, Chan 6, Arana 4, Uyloan 2, Cruz 2, Tiu 2, Ibanes 0, Rodriguez 0.

Quarterscores: 23-16, 43-38, 73-70, 92-89. (PNA)
